Possible Causes
Faulty hot gas valve, weak or failed water pump causing poor freeze pattern, scaled evaporator surface, defective harvest thermostat or sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and shut off water before servicing. Components near the compressor and hot gas valve can be hot.
- Inspect evaporator plate: Remove the front panel and ice bin. Check the evaporator plate for heavy scale or pitting. Thick scale can prevent proper harvest.
- Descale evaporator: Use a Maytag-approved ice machine cleaner. Circulate cleaner through the system if the unit has a clean mode, or apply directly to the plate per instructions. Rinse thoroughly.
- Check water pump operation: Restore power and observe a freeze cycle. Confirm the circulation pump is running and evenly distributing water over the evaporator. If the pump is noisy, weak, or not running, replace it.
- Test harvest sensor/thermostat: Locate the harvest sensor or thermostat on or near the evaporator. Check wiring connections. If accessible, test continuity or resistance per the service manual. Replace if out of spec.
- Hot gas valve: If the ice slab does not release even after cleaning and pump replacement, the hot gas valve may not be opening. This is part of the sealed system and should be tested and replaced by a qualified technician.
