Possible Causes

Failed bin thermistor, dirty or blocked ice level sensor, disconnected sensor harness, faulty main control board input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before removing the ice bin or accessing sensors.

  • Empty and remove bin: Take out all ice and remove the bin to access the bin thermistor or optical ice level sensor.
  • Clean sensor area: If the unit uses optical sensors, clean the emitter and receiver windows with a soft cloth and mild soap solution. Dry completely.
  • Inspect thermistor: For thermistor-based systems, locate the sensor (often mounted on the bin wall or chute). Check for damage to the sensor body or wiring.
  • Check connections: Trace the sensor wires back to the control board and ensure the connector is fully seated and not corroded.
  • Test thermistor: Disconnect and measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to Maytag specifications. Replace if open, shorted, or far out of range.
  • Control board: If the sensor tests good and wiring is intact, the control board input circuit may be defective and require replacement.
