Ice maker displays compressor error, compressor does not start or shuts off quickly

Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely if present.

• Access compressor: Remove the rear or lower access panel to expose the compressor and start components.
• Inspect wiring: Check that all wires are firmly attached to the compressor terminals and start device. Look for burnt or discolored connectors.
• Test overload and relay: Remove the start relay/overload assembly from the compressor. Use a multimeter to test continuity of the overload and relay per the service manual. Replace the start device if open or rattling.
• Check compressor windings: With the start device removed, test resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). If readings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is likely failed.
• Reassemble and test: Install a new OEM Maytag start relay/overload if needed, reconnect wiring, and restore power to test operation.
• Technician service: If the compressor still fails to start or trips the overload, a failed compressor or sealed system issue is likely and requires professional replacement.
