Possible Causes
Low or lost refrigerant charge in sealed system, Failed compressor, Severely dirty condenser coil, Non-running condenser fan motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before removing panels. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself.
- Step 1 – Confirm basic operation: Verify the power light is on and the fan and compressor attempt to run. Listen for a steady humming from the compressor.
- Step 2 – Check condenser and fan: Remove the rear panel. Clean the condenser coil thoroughly and ensure the fan runs whenever the compressor is on.
- Step 3 – Feel evaporator temperature: After 10–15 minutes of operation, carefully touch near (not directly on) the evaporator fingers. They should be very cold and may frost lightly. If they remain warm, cooling is not occurring.
- Step 4 – Inspect compressor: If the compressor is extremely hot and cycles off quickly, the start relay or compressor may be faulty. Replace the compressor start relay/overload first as a common failure point.
- Step 5 – Seek professional service: If the compressor runs but the evaporator never gets cold, the unit may have a refrigerant leak or internal blockage. These sealed system repairs require certified refrigeration service.
