Possible Causes

Stuck water level float, Failed water level sensor, Mineral buildup on water level probes, Faulty wiring or control board input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the ice maker and empty the water reservoir before working inside the unit.

  • Step 1 – Reset and clean: Turn the unit off, unplug it, drain the reservoir, and wipe it clean. Remove any scale or slime buildup that could interfere with the water level sensor or float.
  • Step 2 – Locate the water level device: On RCA countertop models, this is usually a float assembly or a pair of metal level probes in the reservoir. Remove the top cover if needed to access it.
  • Step 3 – Free a stuck float: If your model uses a float, move it up and down by hand. It should move freely. Clean any mineral deposits with a soft brush and white vinegar, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Step 4 – Clean level probes: If your model uses metal probes, gently scrub them with a non-abrasive pad and vinegar to remove scale. Rinse well so no cleaner remains.
  • Step 5 – Inspect wiring: Check the harness from the float/sensor to the control board for loose connectors or damaged wires. Reseat connectors firmly.
  • Step 6 – Test operation: Reassemble, fill with clean water, plug in, and restart. If E2 returns, the water level sensor/float switch or the main control board may need replacement.
