Possible Causes
Failed ice tray motor, Jammed ice tray mechanism, Faulty tray position sensor or limit switch, Broken gear or linkage in tray drive
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before opening any covers or touching internal parts.
- Step 1 – Inspect for mechanical jams: Remove the top cover and look at the ice tray assembly. Check for misaligned parts, broken plastic, or ice buildup preventing the tray from rotating.
- Step 2 – Clear ice obstructions: If ice is wedged around the tray, allow it to melt or carefully remove it by hand. Do not force the tray; you can break the drive gear.
- Step 3 – Check tray movement: With the unit unplugged, gently rotate the tray by hand (if the design allows). It should move smoothly. If it binds or grinds, inspect the tray shaft and bushings for damage.
- Step 4 – Inspect motor and sensor wiring: Locate the small tray motor and any position sensor or limit switch. Ensure all connectors are fully seated and wires are intact.
- Step 5 – Test the motor (optional): Using a multimeter, check the motor coil for continuity. An open circuit indicates a failed motor that must be replaced.
- Step 6 – Replace defective parts: If the motor or position sensor is faulty, replace with the correct RCA ice tray motor or tray position sensor/limit switch. If all hardware is good but E3 persists, the main control board may be at fault.
