Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coils, Failed condenser fan (if equipped), Overheating compressor or faulty overload protector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before cleaning or accessing internal components. Allow hot parts to cool.

  • Step 1 – Check ventilation: Ensure there is at least several inches of clearance around the sides and back of the ice maker. Do not place it in a cabinet or against a wall that blocks airflow.
  • Step 2 – Clean condenser: Remove the rear cover to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint. Do not bend the fins.
  • Step 3 – Inspect condenser fan (if your RCA model has one): Confirm the fan spins freely by hand and is not obstructed. If it is seized or noisy, replace the condenser fan motor.
  • Step 4 – Check ambient temperature: Move the unit to a cooler location if room temperature is above 90°F (32°C). Excessive heat can trigger E5.
  • Step 5 – Allow cool-down: Leave the unit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to let the compressor cool. Then plug in and test.
  • Step 6 – Further diagnosis: If E5 returns quickly, the compressor overload protector or the compressor itself may be failing. These are sealed-system components and typically require a professional technician.
