Possible Causes

Dirty water reservoir, Mold or slime in water lines, Mineral buildup on evaporator, Use of unfiltered tap water with strong taste

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before cleaning. Do not mix cleaning chemicals.

  • Step 1 – Empty and clean reservoir: Discard all ice and water. Wash the reservoir with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly.
  • Step 2 – Descale and sanitize: Fill the reservoir with a mixture of white vinegar and water (or an approved ice maker cleaner). Run a cleaning cycle if your RCA model has one, or run several short cycles and discard the ice.
  • Step 3 – Clean ice basket and interior: Wash the ice basket and interior surfaces with mild detergent, then rinse and dry.
  • Step 4 – Flush with fresh water: Run at least 2–3 full reservoirs of clean water through the machine, discarding all ice, until taste and odor are gone.
  • Step 5 – Use better water: Use filtered or bottled water to reduce future taste and odor issues.
