Safety: Unplug the ice maker before inspecting the tray mechanism.

Remove ice basket: Take out the basket to access the tray or cube grid area.
Check for obstructions: Look for stray ice pieces, plastic fragments, or utensils that may have fallen into the tray mechanism. Remove carefully.
Inspect gears (if visible): On some Salter models, you can see the plastic drive gears. Check for missing or worn teeth.
Lubrication: Do not use oil or grease on food-contact parts. If the manufacturer specifies, use only food-safe lubricant on non-contact pivot points.

Persistent grinding usually indicates worn gears or a failing tray motor assembly, which should be replaced.
