Possible Causes
Faulty evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor dislodged from evaporator surface, Broken sensor wiring, Failed control board sensor circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing internal components.
Steps to address E4:
- Access the evaporator area: Remove the top cover to expose the metal evaporator fingers or plate where ice forms. The sensor is usually clipped or taped to this surface.
- Check sensor placement: Ensure the evaporator temperature sensor is firmly attached to the evaporator. If it has fallen off, reattach it using thermal tape or the original clip.
- Inspect wiring: Look for damaged insulation, pulled wires, or loose connectors between the sensor and the main PCB.
- Test the sensor: Use a multimeter to measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to the ambient sensor if they are the same type. A reading of OL or 0 Ω indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace sensor: If faulty, install a new evaporator NTC sensor. Route the wires away from moving parts and secure them with cable ties.
- Control board check: If a new sensor does not clear E4, the main control board may be defective and should be replaced.
When to call a professional: If you are not comfortable testing sensors or removing covers, seek professional help.
