Possible Causes
Defective evaporator thermistor, sensor dislodged from evaporator plate, damaged sensor harness, bad connection at main PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Disconnect power before removing any covers. Sharp metal edges may be present around the evaporator area; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps:
- Access the evaporator: Remove the front or top cover (depending on model) to expose the ice-making chamber. The evaporator is the cold metal plate or grid where ice forms.
- Locate the sensor: The evaporator sensor is usually clipped or glued to the side or back of the evaporator plate with a small two-wire lead.
- Check mounting: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the evaporator surface. If it has fallen off, reattach using thermal tape or the original clip so it makes good contact.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for broken insulation, corrosion, or loose connectors. Reseat the plug on the PCB.
- Test resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to SMAD service specs (typically a few kΩ at freezing temperatures). If the sensor reads open or shorted, it must be replaced.
- Replace sensor: Install a new evaporator temperature sensor, route the harness away from moving parts, and secure it to the evaporator.
- Reassemble and test: Restore power and run a cycle. Confirm E2 does not reappear and that ice forms normally.
