Possible Causes
Overheated compressor, blocked condenser airflow, failed condenser fan motor, faulty compressor overload protector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the ice maker. The compressor and condenser can be very hot; allow them to cool before touching.
Steps:
- Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the unit (typically at least 10–15 cm at the sides and back). Remove dust and debris from the condenser grille with a soft brush or vacuum.
- Inspect condenser fan: Remove the rear panel and verify the condenser fan spins freely by hand. If it is seized or noisy, the condenser fan motor may be failing.
- Test fan operation: Plug the unit in briefly and observe whether the fan starts when the compressor attempts to run. If the fan does not run, test voltage at the fan connector (use caution, live voltage). If voltage is present but the fan does not turn, replace the fan motor.
- Check overload protector: With power disconnected, remove the cover on the compressor terminals and inspect the overload/relay assembly. Look for burn marks or a burnt smell.
- Replace overload if needed: If the overload is open when cool (test with a multimeter), replace the compressor overload protector with a compatible SMAD part.
- Restart and monitor: Reassemble, restore power, and run the unit. If E5 recurs quickly and the compressor is extremely hot, a sealed system issue may exist and a professional technician is recommended.
