Possible Causes

Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator surface, Damaged sensor wiring harness, Faulty main control board thermistor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing internal components.

  • Visual inspection: Remove the cover to access the evaporator (the cold metal grid where ice forms). Locate the small sensor (thermistor) clipped or taped to the evaporator tubing.
  • Check placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the evaporator surface and not hanging loose. Reattach with aluminum tape or the original clip if necessary.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for cuts, pinches, or loose connectors. Reseat the plug on the control board.
  • Test operation: Restore power and run a cycle. If E4 reappears quickly, the thermistor is likely defective.
  • Replace thermistor: Order an OEM SPT evaporator temperature sensor. Unplug the unit, remove the old sensor, route the new sensor along the same path, secure it to the evaporator, and reconnect to the board.
