Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Open overload protector, Locked compressor, Low supply voltage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely if handling.
Steps to address EC05:
- 1. Listen for start attempts: When power is applied, a clicking sound every few minutes may indicate the compressor is trying to start and tripping the overload.
- 2. Check ventilation and condenser cleanliness: Overheating can cause overload trips. Clean the condenser coil and ensure proper airflow.
- 3. Inspect start components: Access the compressor terminal cover. Remove the cover and inspect the start relay and overload for signs of burning or cracking.
- 4. Test start relay and overload: With power off, use a multimeter to check continuity of the overload and proper operation of the start relay (per the tech sheet). Replace with OEM Sub-Zero start device kit if defective.
- 5. Evaluate compressor: If new start components do not resolve the issue and the compressor still fails to start or draws locked-rotor current, the compressor may be mechanically locked and require replacement by a certified technician.
