Possible Causes

Defective evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor dislodged from evaporator plate, Damaged sensor harness, Failed main control board sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before opening any panels. Shut off the water supply if you will be working near the evaporator or water lines.

Steps:

  • Access the evaporator area: Remove the front panel or top cover (depending on model). The evaporator plate is the cold metal surface where ice forms in Summit ice makers.
  • Locate the evaporator sensor: It is usually a small probe or bullet-style sensor clipped or taped to the evaporator plate with a two-wire harness leading to the control board.
  • Check mounting: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the evaporator surface. If it has fallen off, clean the surface and reattach using thermal tape or the original clip.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for pinched, cut, or corroded wires. Reseat the connector at the control board.
  • Test the sensor: With a multimeter, measure resistance at room temperature and compare to the service manual spec (commonly 5–20 kΩ). If open or shorted, replace the sensor.
  • Replace faulty parts: Install a new evaporator temperature sensor if readings are out of range. If the sensor is good but E2 persists, the main control board may need replacement.

Note: A bad evaporator sensor can cause the unit to mis-time harvest cycles and stop ice production to protect the system.
