Display shows E4, compressor may not start or shuts down quickly, no ice production.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning or accessing internal components. Do not bend or puncture refrigerant lines.
Airflow and cleaning:
- Check installation: Ensure the Summit ice maker has proper clearance around the sides and rear as specified in the manual. Poor ventilation can cause high pressure faults.
- Clean condenser coils: Remove the front kick plate or rear panel to access the condenser. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the fins. For heavy grease, use a coil cleaner rated for refrigeration coils.
- Inspect condenser fan: Confirm the condenser fan spins freely by hand. Plug the unit back in briefly and verify the fan runs when the compressor runs. If it hums, stalls, or does not start, replace the condenser fan motor.
Sensor and switch checks:
- Locate the high-pressure switch or condenser temperature sensor (often clipped to the discharge line or condenser). Inspect wiring and connectors.
- If the sensor is visibly damaged or the switch is leaking oil/refrigerant, it must be replaced by a qualified technician.
Important: If E4 persists after cleaning and fan replacement, there may be a sealed system issue (overcharge, restriction, or failing compressor). This requires an EPA-certified refrigeration technician.
