Possible Causes
Defective compressor start relay, Failed PTC starter, Open overload protector, Locked compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker. Compressor and start components can be live and hot during operation.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and its electrical box.
- Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the PTC relay and overload protector for burn marks, cracks, or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
- Test components: Use a multimeter to check continuity of the overload protector and resistance of the PTC relay. An open overload or shorted relay indicates replacement is needed.
- Check compressor windings: With all power disconnected and components removed, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Compare to service specs. If windings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is faulty.
- Reassemble and test: Install new start components if required, reattach the cover, and restore power. Listen for the compressor starting smoothly without repeated clicking.
- Note: If the compressor is locked or electrically failed, replacement requires a certified refrigeration technician.
