Possible Causes

Failed infrared ice level sensor, Misaligned emitter/receiver boards, Disconnected or damaged bin level harness, Obstructed sensor window by frost or debris

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power before removing the ice bin or sensor covers. Beware of sharp metal edges inside the cabinet.

  • Step 1 – Empty and inspect bin: Remove the ice bin. Check for ice bridging or chunks blocking the ice level sensor area.
  • Step 2 – Locate bin level sensor: On many U-Line models, an infrared emitter and receiver are mounted on opposite sides of the bin opening. Some models use a mechanical bin arm or optical sensor assembly.
  • Step 3 – Clean sensor windows: Use a soft cloth and warm water to clean the sensor lenses. Remove any frost, mineral deposits, or dirt. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Step 4 – Check alignment and mounting: Ensure both sides of the IR sensor are firmly mounted and facing each other. Adjust if they appear skewed or loose.
  • Step 5 – Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor harness back to the control board. Look for pinched wires or loose connectors. Reseat the plug at the control.
  • Step 6 – Test operation: Restore power with the bin removed. Many models will attempt to start ice production if the sensor path is clear. If E03 persists, the sensor assembly is likely defective.
  • Step 7 – Replace sensor assembly: Remove mounting screws, disconnect the harness, and install the new bin level sensor or IR board kit. Route wiring as originally installed.

If replacing the sensor does not clear E03, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and may require replacement.
