Display shows E06, unit powers but compressor does not start or shuts off quickly
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Disconnect power before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely if present.
- Step 1 – Access compressor area: Remove the rear or lower access panel to expose the compressor, start device, and overload.
- Step 2 – Listen for symptoms: When briefly powered, a clicking sound every few seconds often indicates a start device or overload issue. Do not allow repeated cycling for long periods.
- Step 3 – Inspect start device: With power off, remove the start relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Check for burn marks, rattling pieces, or melted plastic.
- Step 4 – Test overload: Measure continuity across the overload protector. An open reading when cool indicates a failed overload.
- Step 5 – Replace start device kit: If the relay or overload is suspect, install a U-Line compatible compressor start device kit. Match wiring to the original configuration.
- Step 6 – Check line voltage: With the unit powered and calling for cooling, measure voltage at the compressor input (only if you are trained to work on live circuits). Low voltage can cause E06 and hard starting.
If the compressor still fails to start with a new start device and proper voltage, the compressor may be mechanically locked or internally failed. This requires sealed-system service by an EPA-certified technician.
