Viking ice maker shows E6; unit may not start or may shut down unexpectedly
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing panels. Components near the compressor and condenser can be hot; allow time to cool.
- Step 1 – Check ambient conditions: Ensure the ice maker is not installed in a space exceeding Viking’s maximum ambient temperature rating (often around 100°F/38°C).
- Step 2 – Clean condenser coil: Remove the front grille and use a brush and vacuum to thoroughly clean the condenser fins. Do not bend the fins.
- Step 3 – Verify condenser fan operation: With panels in place and power restored, observe the fan when the compressor runs. If the fan does not start, test the fan motor for proper voltage and replace the condenser fan motor if it is not running with correct voltage applied.
- Step 4 – Inspect high-temp sensor or thermal switch: Locate the thermal cutoff or temperature sensor near the compressor or discharge line. Check for loose connections or signs of overheating. Replace if open or out of spec.
- Step 5 – Ensure proper ventilation: Confirm that cabinet grills and cutouts are not blocked by cabinetry or stored items. Maintain clear airflow around the unit.
After addressing airflow and component issues, clear the E6 code by power cycling and monitor operation to ensure the unit runs without overheating.
