Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge them safely with a resistor before handling.

• Step 1 – Listen for compressor behavior: On startup, note if the compressor hums then clicks off, or fails to start at all. Repeated clicking suggests a start component issue or locked rotor.
• Step 2 – Inspect wiring: Remove the rear or side access panel and check all compressor terminals and harness connectors for tightness and signs of overheating.
• Step 3 – Test start relay and capacitor: Remove the start relay and capacitor from the compressor. Use a multimeter to check the relay for continuity and the capacitor for proper microfarad rating (using a capacitance meter). Replace any component that is open, shorted, or out of tolerance.
• Step 4 – Measure compressor windings: With all wires removed, measure resistance between the three compressor pins (C, R, S). Compare to Viking’s specifications. A short to ground or open winding indicates a failed compressor.
• Step 5 – Technician-only compressor replacement: If the compressor is locked or windings are defective, a sealed system technician must replace the compressor, evacuate, and recharge the system.

After replacing start components or compressor, clear the E7 code and verify that the compressor starts smoothly and the unit cools properly.
