Possible Causes
Failed evaporator thermistor, Loose or corroded thermistor connector on control board, Broken thermistor wiring harness, Faulty main control PCB temperature input circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker or switch off the circuit breaker before opening any panels. Do not work on live wiring.
- Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then restore power to see if the E1 code clears. If it returns, continue.
- Access the evaporator sensor: Remove the rear or side service panel (depending on model). Locate the evaporator coil and follow the small two‑wire harness leading to a sensor clipped to the evaporator tubing.
- Check connections: Inspect the thermistor plug where it connects to the main control board. Reseat the connector and look for corrosion, bent pins, or broken wires.
- Test the thermistor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure its resistance with a multimeter. Compare the reading to the Westinghouse service chart (typically 5–50 kΩ depending on temperature). A reading of open (OL) or 0 Ω indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace if defective: If resistance is out of spec or intermittent when you gently wiggle the wires, replace the evaporator thermistor. Clip the new sensor in the same position on the evaporator and route the harness away from sharp edges and hot components.
- Inspect the control board: If the thermistor tests good, the temperature input circuit on the main control PCB may be faulty. Check for burn marks or swollen components. Replace the board if damaged or if E1 persists with a known-good sensor.
