Possible Causes
Failed bin thermistor, dirty or failed ice level optical sensor, loose sensor harness connection, defective main control board input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before working inside the cabinet.
- Identify the level sensor type: Many Whirlpool undercounter ice makers use either a bin thermistor or an optical ice level sensor near the top of the bin.
- Clean optical sensors: If your model has an emitter/receiver pair, gently clean the lenses with a soft cloth and mild soap solution. Dry completely. Obstructions or mineral film can trigger an E2 fault.
- Check bin thermistor: If a thermistor is used, locate it on the bin wall. Inspect for physical damage or broken wires. Test resistance with a multimeter and compare to the service chart. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- Inspect harness and connectors: Trace the sensor wiring back to the control board. Reseat connectors and look for corrosion or loose pins.
- Power up and test: Restore power, clear the error (if applicable), and run a service test. If the E2 returns with a known-good sensor and wiring, suspect a faulty main control board.
