Possible Causes

Shorted evaporator overtemp sensor, sensor out of position, wiring harness damage, defective control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before removing panels or touching wiring.

  • Access evaporator area: Remove the ice bin and inner panels to expose the evaporator plate or grid.
  • Locate overtemp/defrost sensor: This sensor is often clipped to the evaporator or nearby tubing. Verify it is firmly attached and not hanging loose.
  • Inspect for ice buildup: Heavy ice accumulation around the sensor can cause false readings. Allow the unit to fully defrost (doors open, power off) for several hours, then restart.
  • Test sensor resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the service chart. Replace if readings are out of range.
  • Check harness and board: Inspect wiring to the control board for damage. If sensor and wiring are good but E4 remains, the control board’s sensor circuit may be faulty.
