Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, open overload protector, seized compressor, defective main control board relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power. Do not attempt sealed system repairs without proper certification.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and start components.
- Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the start device from the compressor terminals. Shake the relay gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it is likely bad.
- Test continuity: Use a multimeter to check continuity through the start relay and overload protector. Replace if open or visibly damaged.
- Check compressor windings: With the start device removed, measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Compare to Whirlpool specs. Very high or zero readings may indicate a failed compressor.
- Reassemble and test: Install a new OEM start device if needed, reconnect wiring, and restore power. If E6 persists and the compressor does not start, the main control board or compressor itself may require professional diagnosis.
