Safety: Disconnect power before servicing.
- Locate ambient sensor: This thermistor is typically mounted near the air intake or condenser area to sense room temperature.
- Inspect mounting and cleanliness: Ensure the sensor is not touching hot components and is free of dust buildup that could insulate it.
- Test resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to Whirlpool’s thermistor chart. Replace if readings are out of range.
- Check wiring: Follow the harness to the control board, looking for chafed insulation or loose connectors. Repair as needed.
- Reset and test: Restore power and clear the error. If E8 persists with a known-good sensor and wiring, replace the main control board.
