Possible Causes

Open or shorted ice mold thermistor, broken harness in freezer door, failed ice maker module sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power to the refrigerator before working in the freezer compartment or door.

  • Access ice maker: Remove the ice bin and any covers to expose the ice maker assembly.
  • Inspect harness: On French door models, check the wiring harness where it passes through the freezer door hinge for breaks or pinched wires.
  • Test mold thermistor: If accessible, disconnect the thermistor leads and measure resistance. Compare to Whirlpool’s chart. Replace the ice maker assembly if the thermistor is integrated and out of spec.
  • Check connectors: Reseat the ice maker plug at the ceiling or rear wall connection.
  • Restore power and test: After reassembly, restore power and allow several hours for the ice maker to cycle. If F1 returns, replace the ice maker assembly or control board per Whirlpool’s service bulletin for your model.
