Possible Causes
Failed hot gas valve, defective harvest thermostat or sensor, control board harvest timing fault, scaled evaporator surface
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before defrosting or servicing.
- Defrost evaporator: Allow the unit to sit unplugged with the door open until all ice melts from the evaporator plate. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
- Inspect evaporator surface: Look for heavy mineral scale that can cause ice to stick. Clean with a Whirlpool-approved descaler following instructions.
- Check harvest sensor: Test the harvest thermostat or thermistor for proper operation. Replace if readings are out of spec.
- Hot gas valve: In diagnostic mode, energize the hot gas valve and verify it opens (you may hear a change in refrigerant flow). If the coil is open or the valve is stuck, replace it (requires sealed system work by a certified technician).
