Possible Causes
Failed main control PCB, Stuck power relay on control board, Corrupted control firmware, Shorted low-voltage power supply on PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the microwave before removing the control panel or cabinet.
Steps:
- 1. Power reset: Unplug the microwave for at least 5 minutes to allow the control to fully discharge. Plug back in and check if E5 clears. If it returns immediately, continue.
- 2. Inspect control board: Remove the control panel assembly (usually screws behind the vent grille or side). Visually inspect the main PCB for burned spots, swollen capacitors, or cracked solder joints, especially around relays.
- 3. Check connectors: Ensure all ribbon cables and wire harnesses are fully seated and not corroded. Reseat connectors to the control board.
- 4. Test relays (advanced): With power disconnected, use a multimeter to check relay coil resistance and inspect for welded contacts if accessible. A relay that is mechanically stuck or has open coil should be replaced (usually by replacing the entire control board).
- 5. Replace control board: If no external issues are found and E5 persists, replace the main control PCB with the correct Avanti part number. Transfer any overlay or mounting hardware as needed.
If you are not comfortable working with electronic boards, contact a professional technician.
