Possible Causes
Open grill heating element, Open convection heating element, Failed grill/convection thermostat, Faulty heater relay on control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the microwave and allow it to cool completely before servicing. Heating elements and surrounding metal can remain hot.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Inspect the grill element (usually at the top of the cavity) for visible breaks, burn spots, or sagging. For convection models, the rear circular element behind the fan cover should also be checked.
- Step 2 – Access elements: Remove the outer cabinet and, if necessary, the internal covers to access the element terminals. Note their wiring positions before disconnecting.
- Step 3 – Test elements: With a multimeter set to resistance, measure across each element’s terminals. A good element typically shows low resistance (10–80 Ω depending on power). If it reads open (OL), replace the element.
- Step 4 – Check thermostats: Locate any grill or cavity thermostats/thermal cut-outs in series with the elements. Test for continuity at room temperature. Replace any open thermostat with the correct temperature rating.
- Step 5 – Relay and wiring: Inspect wiring from the control PCB to the elements and relays for burns or loose connections. If elements and thermostats are good, the heater relay on the control PCB may be faulty and the board may need replacement.
