Possible Causes

Defective primary door switch, Defective secondary door switch, Misaligned door latch hooks, Damaged door switch mounting bracket

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet before any disassembly. Microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge even when unplugged. Do not touch internal high-voltage components (capacitor, transformer, magnetron). If you are not experienced, contact a qualified technician.

Step-by-step checks:

  • 1. Verify door closure: Ensure the door closes fully and evenly. Check that the door is not sagging and that the latch hooks engage smoothly with the cabinet.
  • 2. Inspect latch hooks: Open the door and inspect the plastic latch hooks on the door. If they are cracked, bent, or loose, the interlock switches may not actuate correctly. Replace the door latch assembly if damaged.
  • 3. Access interlock switches: Remove the outer cabinet (usually several screws at the back and sides). Carefully slide the cover back and up. Locate the door interlock switch cluster near the door latch area.
  • 4. Test switches with a multimeter: Label the wires, then disconnect them from each switch. Using a multimeter set to continuity, check each switch while opening and closing the door latch by hand. A good switch should change from open to closed (or vice versa) as the latch moves. Replace any switch that does not change state or shows inconsistent readings.
  • 5. Check switch mounting bracket: Ensure the metal or plastic bracket holding the switches is not bent or loose. Tighten screws or replace the bracket if it allows the switches to move out of alignment.
  • 6. Reassemble and test: Refit the cabinet, secure all screws, plug the microwave back in, and test operation. The E1 code should clear if the interlock system is working correctly.

Warning: If the door or interlock system appears severely damaged, do not operate the microwave until it is professionally repaired. A faulty door system can cause microwave radiation leakage.
