Safety: Unplug the microwave and allow it to cool completely.

User-level steps:

Check ventilation: Ensure that all intake and exhaust vents are clear of obstructions (cabinetry, wall, items on top of the microwave).
Clean filters and vents: On over-the-range models, remove and clean the grease filters. Wipe dust and grease from external vents.
Avoid running empty: Never operate the microwave without food or liquid inside, as this can cause overheating.
After cooling for 30–60 minutes, plug back in and test. If E61 recurs quickly, internal components need inspection.

Technician-level steps:

Test the cavity thermostat / thermal cut-out for proper operation.
Verify operation of the cooling fan motor and ensure airflow paths are not blocked internally.
Inspect for heavy grease buildup around the fan and vents and clean as needed.

Microwave displays E61 and stops heating shortly after starting.
