Possible Causes
Metal object or foil in cavity, damaged or burned waveguide cover, heavy grease buildup on cavity walls, chipped interior paint exposing metal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Immediate safety: Press STOP/CLEAR and open the door. Unplug the microwave.
Inspection:
- Remove any metal utensils, twist ties, or foil from the cavity.
- Inspect the waveguide cover (mica sheet on side wall or ceiling) for burn marks, holes, or cracks.
- Clean the interior thoroughly with a mild detergent and non-abrasive sponge to remove grease and food splatter.
- Check for chipped paint exposing bare metal; small chips can cause arcing.
Repairs:
- Replace a damaged waveguide cover with a compatible Farberware part before using the microwave again.
- For small paint chips, use microwave-safe cavity touch-up paint according to instructions.
If arcing persists after cleaning and replacing the waveguide cover, discontinue use and have the unit inspected professionally.
