Possible Causes

Defective membrane keypad, Loose ribbon cable between keypad and control board, Contaminated or moisture-damaged touch panel, Failed user interface PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet before removing any panels. Microwaves contain high-voltage components that can retain charge even when unplugged. Do not touch the high-voltage capacitor or magnetron area.

  • Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in and test the keypad. Sometimes the control board locks up and a reset will clear the F1 code.
  • Check for stuck keys: Gently press each key on the touch panel. If any key feels stuck or does not click, clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth (no chemicals into the seams). Do not spray cleaner directly on the panel.
  • Inspect keypad ribbon cable: Remove the control panel assembly (usually by removing the top grille and one or two mounting screws). Carefully pull the control panel forward. Locate the flat ribbon cable from the keypad to the control PCB. Reseat it by pulling it out and reinserting it fully and squarely.
  • Check for moisture or corrosion: Look for signs of moisture, steam damage, or corrosion on the keypad connector and control board. If present, dry the area thoroughly and clean light corrosion with isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush.
  • Replace keypad or UI board if needed: If keys still do not respond or F1 returns, the membrane keypad or user interface board is likely faulty. Order the correct Fisher & Paykel keypad or UI assembly using the model number, and replace the entire panel assembly following the service manual. If you are not comfortable working around high-voltage components, contact a qualified technician.
