Possible Causes

Defective primary door switch, Defective secondary door switch, Misaligned door latch hooks, Damaged door switch mounting bracket

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet before any disassembly. Microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge even when unplugged. Do not touch internal high-voltage components (capacitor, transformer, magnetron). If you are not experienced, contact a qualified technician.

Steps to check door switches and latches:

  • 1. Inspect the door: Open and close the door several times. Ensure it closes evenly and the latch hooks fully engage. Look for cracked or loose plastic latch hooks on the door.
  • 2. Check for obstructions: Make sure no food debris or warped trim is preventing the door from closing fully against the front frame.
  • 3. Access the door switches: Remove the outer cabinet (usually screws at the back and sides). Carefully slide the cover back and up. The door switches are mounted on a plastic or metal interlock bracket near the door latch openings.
  • 4. Test switches with a multimeter: Label and disconnect the wires from each switch. Set the meter to continuity. With the door closed, the primary and secondary switches should show continuity (closed). With the door open, they should be open (no continuity). Replace any switch that does not change state correctly.
  • 5. Check the mounting bracket: Ensure the interlock bracket is not cracked or loose. Tighten screws; replace the bracket if it flexes or is broken, as this can cause intermittent E1 errors.
  • 6. Reassemble and test: Refit the cabinet, plug the unit back in, and test with a cup of water. If E1 persists, stop using the microwave and consult a professional.
