Possible Causes
Shorted membrane keypad, Damaged keypad ribbon cable, Failed main control board keypad input circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Warning: Always unplug the microwave before opening any panels. Do not attempt to access or service the high-voltage section.
- Reset power: Unplug for 5 minutes, then plug back in and test. If F2 returns immediately, the fault is likely hardware.
- Check keypad operation: Try pressing different keys. If random keys activate or multiple keys trigger at once, the keypad is likely shorted.
- Inspect ribbon cable: Remove the top grille and control panel (per your GE model's service instructions). Disconnect the keypad ribbon from the control board, inspect for cracks, burns, or corrosion, then reconnect firmly.
- Test with ribbon disconnected: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the keypad ribbon and then plug the unit back in. If F2 disappears (but keypad won't work), the keypad is defective. If F2 remains, the control board is likely faulty.
- Replace faulty part: Replace the membrane keypad or the entire control panel assembly if the keypad is integrated. If the control board is at fault, replace the main control board.
