Possible Causes

Defective membrane keypad, Loose ribbon cable between keypad and control board, Failed electronic control board (PCB), Moisture or spill intrusion behind control panel

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the microwave before removing any panels. Microwaves contain high-voltage components that can retain a charge even when unplugged. Do not touch the high-voltage capacitor or magnetron area.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Power reset: Unplug the microwave for 5–10 minutes to allow the control board to fully discharge. Plug back in and test. If E1 clears temporarily but returns, continue below.
  • Inspect keypad area: Check for signs of liquid spills, steam damage, or stuck keys on the front keypad. Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth and then dry thoroughly.
  • Access control panel: Remove the top grille (usually a few screws), then remove the screw(s) securing the control panel and gently lift it out. Do not pull hard on the wires.
  • Check ribbon cable: Locate the flat ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board. Reseat it by gently pulling it out and reinserting it fully and squarely into the connector. Inspect for corrosion, burnt spots, or cracks.
  • Test keypad: With the unit unplugged, press each button and feel for proper tactile feedback. If some buttons feel mushy or permanently pressed, the membrane keypad is likely defective.
  • If damage is visible: Replace the membrane keypad or the entire control panel assembly (depending on model design). If the keypad looks good but E1 persists, the electronic control board is likely faulty and should be replaced.

When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable removing the control panel or identifying the correct replacement parts, contact a qualified appliance technician. Do not operate the microwave with the control panel loose or exposed.
