Possible Causes
Damaged membrane keypad matrix, Corroded keypad ribbon connector, Failed touch controller IC on control board, Moisture ingress behind control panel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the microwave before removing the control panel.
Steps:
- Power reset: Unplug for 5–10 minutes, then reconnect. If E6 returns, proceed.
- Clean keypad surface: Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and then dry. Remove any sticky residue that may cause keys to stick.
- Access control panel: Remove the top grille and the screw(s) securing the control panel. Tilt the panel out carefully.
- Inspect ribbon cable: Disconnect and reconnect the keypad ribbon cable to the control board. Look for corrosion, bent contacts, or cracks in the ribbon.
- Test keypad: If some keys never respond while others do, the membrane keypad is likely failing and should be replaced.
- If the keypad and ribbon look good but E6 persists, the control board touch controller circuitry is likely defective and the board should be replaced.
Note: Many Hamilton Beach models integrate the keypad with the front control panel; replacing the entire assembly is often the most practical repair.
