Possible Causes
Contaminated humidity sensor, Failed humidity sensor, Blocked sensor vent path, Faulty control board sensor circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the microwave before internal cleaning near the sensor.
Cleaning and inspection:
- Locate the humidity/steam sensor inside the cavity (often behind a small grill or opening on the top or side wall).
- Clean the area around the sensor opening with a mild detergent solution and a soft cloth. Remove grease, food splatter, and residue that may block steam from reaching the sensor.
- Ensure the cavity is dry before testing again.
Usage test:
- Plug the microwave back in and try a standard timed cook (not sensor mode). If timed cook works but sensor modes fail with SE, the sensor or its circuit is likely faulty.
Sensor replacement (qualified DIYers):
- Remove the outer cabinet to access the humidity sensor and its wiring harness.
- Inspect for loose connections or damaged wires.
- Replace the humidity sensor with a Hamilton Beach-compatible part if contamination cleaning does not resolve the error.
- If a new sensor does not fix the issue, the control board sensor circuit may be defective and the board should be replaced.
