Possible Causes

Seized cavity cooling fan motor, Obstructed fan blades, Failed fan motor winding, Faulty fan relay on control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before inspection.

User-level checks:

  • Ensure that external vents are not blocked and that there is adequate clearance around the microwave.
  • Listen during operation: if you do not hear the usual fan noise, or hear grinding/scraping, the fan may be obstructed or failing.

Technician-level checks:

  • Remove the outer cover to access the cooling fan assembly.
  • Inspect the fan blades for debris, foil, or insulation obstructing movement; remove any obstruction.
  • Spin the fan by hand; if stiff or noisy, replace the fan motor.
  • Check for supply voltage at the fan motor terminals when the unit is running; if no voltage, test the fan relay and control PCB.

Recommendation: Replace the cooling fan motor if seized or noisy. Continued use with a faulty fan can overheat the magnetron and other components.
