Possible Causes
Failed magnetron, Failed high-voltage transformer (non-inverter models), Open high-voltage diode, Open high-voltage capacitor, Faulty inverter board (inverter models)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the microwave. The high-voltage system is extremely dangerous. Do not attempt to test or discharge the capacitor unless you are trained.
- Confirm symptom: Place a cup of water inside and run for 1–2 minutes. If the water is still cold, heating is not occurring.
- Listen for hum: A normal low hum usually indicates the high-voltage system is energizing. No hum or a loud buzzing can indicate component failure.
- Visual inspection: Remove the outer cabinet and inspect the magnetron, HV transformer, capacitor, and diode for burn marks or melted insulation.
- Do not touch HV parts: Avoid contact with the capacitor, transformer, and magnetron terminals.
- Professional repair: Have a qualified technician test and replace the defective magnetron, HV transformer, HV capacitor, HV diode, or inverter board as appropriate.
