Possible Causes
Failed magnetron thermostat, Blocked cooling airflow, Overheated magnetron, Faulty cooling fan motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the microwave and allow it to cool completely. Do not touch high-voltage components.
- Check vents and filters: Ensure exterior vents are clear and grease filters are clean. Wash filters with warm soapy water, rinse, and dry.
- Inspect cooling fan: Access the internal cooling fan motor and verify it spins freely and runs during operation. Replace if seized or not running.
- Test magnetron thermostat: Locate the magnetron thermostat (thermal cutout) mounted on or near the magnetron. With power off, remove one wire and test for continuity. An open thermostat at room temperature (if not resettable) must be replaced.
- Resettable thermostat: If the thermostat has a reset button, press it to restore continuity after cooling.
- Replace faulty parts: Replace the magnetron thermostat or cooling fan motor as needed. If overheating recurs, the magnetron itself may be failing and should be replaced by a professional.
