Possible Causes

Built-up grease and food residue, Burned food particles in vents, Saturated charcoal filter (OTR models), Melted plastic residue

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the microwave before deep cleaning or removing filters.

  • Deep clean cavity: Wipe interior surfaces with a solution of warm water and mild detergent. For stubborn odors, heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for several minutes, then wipe down.
  • Clean vents and filters: On over-the-range models, remove and wash grease filters. Replace the charcoal filter if it is older than 6–12 months or has absorbed strong odors.
  • Inspect for melted plastic: Look for any melted containers or plastic on the turntable or cavity floor and remove carefully.
  • Air out: Leave the door open for several hours after cleaning to allow odors to dissipate.

If a strong electrical or chemical smell persists during operation, unplug the unit and have it inspected for overheated components.
