Possible Causes
Shorted membrane keypad contacts, Moisture or liquid ingress behind control panel, Damaged keypad ribbon cable, Failed keypad scan circuit on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the microwave before opening the control panel.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Power reset: Unplug for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in. If SE returns immediately, a key is likely shorted.
- 2. Dry out moisture: If SE appeared after heavy steam cooking, leave the door open and allow the control area to dry for several hours. Do not use the microwave until the error clears.
- 3. Access control panel (experienced DIYers): Remove screws securing the control panel and gently pull it forward. Inspect for signs of moisture, corrosion, or burnt spots on the keypad and board.
- 4. Inspect ribbon cable: Disconnect and inspect the keypad ribbon cable for cracks or corrosion. Clean contacts gently with isopropyl alcohol and reinsert.
- 5. Replace keypad or panel: If SE persists, replace the membrane keypad or the entire control panel assembly, depending on your Midea model. If a new keypad does not resolve the issue, the main control board is likely defective and must be replaced.
Do not continue using the microwave if it starts by itself or behaves unpredictably; disconnect power and arrange for service.
