Possible Causes
Metal object in cavity, damaged or contaminated waveguide cover, chipped cavity paint exposing metal, rack or shelf contacting cavity walls, foil or twist ties in food
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Stop the microwave immediately if you see sparks. Unplug the unit and allow it to cool.
- Remove metal: Ensure no metal utensils, foil, twist ties, or metal-trimmed dishes are inside.
- Inspect waveguide cover: Check the waveguide cover for burns, holes, or heavy grease. Replace if damaged.
- Clean cavity: Thoroughly clean food splatters and grease, especially near the waveguide and rack supports.
- Touch-up paint: If enamel is chipped and bare metal is exposed, use microwave-safe cavity touch-up paint to cover small areas, following manufacturer instructions.
- Test with water: After repairs, test by heating a cup of water. If arcing persists, discontinue use and have a technician inspect the magnetron and cavity.
