Possible Causes
Food splatter burning on cavity walls or waveguide cover, Damaged mica waveguide cover, Overheated wiring or components, Grill element burning off residue
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Immediate action: Press STOP/CANCEL, unplug the microwave, and open the door to ventilate. Do not continue using the unit until the cause is identified.
Steps:
- 1. Inspect interior: Look for burnt food, grease buildup, or charred spots on the cavity walls, ceiling, and turntable.
- 2. Check waveguide cover: Examine the mica waveguide cover (usually on the side wall) for burn marks, holes, or warping. A damaged cover can arc and burn.
- 3. Clean thoroughly: Clean the interior with a mild detergent and water. Do not use abrasive pads that can damage the coating.
- 4. Test carefully: After cleaning and drying, run the microwave with a cup of water for 30–60 seconds. If the burning smell persists or smoke reappears, unplug and seek service.
If the waveguide cover is damaged, replace it with a Morphy Richards-compatible mica cover before further use.
