Possible Causes

Open or tripped magnetron thermal cut-out, Blocked cooling vents, Failed cooling fan motor, Overheated magnetron assembly

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Unplug the appliance. High-voltage components inside a microwave are dangerous. Do not touch the high-voltage section (transformer, capacitor, magnetron) unless you are trained.

Basic user checks:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the Neff microwave has the required clearance around the sides, top, and rear as per the manual. Remove any items blocking the front or rear vents.
  • Clean vents and filters: For combination models, remove and clean any grease filters. Use a soft brush or vacuum to clear dust from external vents.
  • Allow cooling: Leave the door open and let the unit cool for 30–60 minutes, then try again with a cup of water.

Technical checks (for competent persons only):

  • Remove the outer cabinet and locate the magnetron thermal cut-out (small round thermostat clipped to the magnetron or waveguide).
  • With power disconnected, remove the wires and test the thermostat for continuity. It should read closed (0 Ω) at room temperature. If open, replace it.
  • Check the cooling fan motor for free rotation and signs of obstruction. Spin the fan by hand; it should move freely. If seized or noisy, replace the fan motor.
  • Inspect wiring from the thermal cut-out to the control board for heat damage.

If the error persists after ensuring proper ventilation and replacing a faulty thermostat or fan, the magnetron may be overheating due to internal failure. In that case, have a Neff-authorized technician evaluate the magnetron and high-voltage circuit.
