Possible Causes
Mechanical wear from cleaning, Steam and condensation damage, Chips from dropping cookware, Prolonged exposure to spills
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the microwave before working inside the cavity.
- Step 1 – Clean and dry: Remove loose paint flakes and clean the area with a mild detergent. Dry thoroughly.
- Step 2 – Assess rust: Light surface rust can sometimes be sanded lightly and covered with microwave-safe cavity paint. Deep rust or holes compromise safety.
- Step 3 – Apply cavity paint: Use only microwave-safe cavity touch-up paint, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow full curing time before use.
- Step 4 – Replace if severe: If rust is extensive or metal is perforated, the cavity is unsafe and the microwave should be replaced.
