Safety Warning: The magnetron and high-voltage circuit operate at lethal voltages. Do not touch or service the high-voltage section (magnetron, capacitor, transformer, diode) unless you are trained and equipped to safely discharge the capacitor.
Basic user checks:
- 1. Check ventilation: Ensure the RCA microwave has proper clearance on all sides and that rear and side vents are not blocked by cabinets, walls, or items on top of the unit.
- 2. Clean filters (OTR models): Remove and clean the grease filters and, if present, the charcoal filter according to the user manual. Clogged filters can reduce airflow and cause overheating.
- 3. Test with a microwave-safe load: Place a large mug of water inside and run on HIGH for 1–2 minutes. If E2 appears quickly, the unit is likely overheating or the magnetron circuit is failing.
Advanced checks (technician recommended):
- 4. Unplug the unit. Remove the outer cover to access the internal components.
- 5. Inspect cooling fan: Verify that the cooling fan motor spins freely and is not obstructed by debris. Replace the fan motor if seized or noisy.
- 6. Check thermal cut-outs: Locate the magnetron and cavity thermal cut-outs (TCOs) mounted on the magnetron body and oven cavity. Test for continuity with a multimeter. Replace any open TCO with the exact RCA-specified part.
- 7. Evaluate magnetron: If airflow and TCOs are good but E2 persists and there is no heat, the magnetron may be failing under load and should be replaced by a professional.
