Possible Causes

Food residue burning on cavity surfaces, Failing magnetron or transformer, Overheated wiring or connectors, Grease buildup on filters and fan

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety Warning: If you smell strong electrical burning or see smoke from vents, unplug the microwave immediately and do not use it until inspected.

Steps:

  • 1. Clean thoroughly: Remove the glass tray and support ring. Clean the interior, including ceiling and walls, with a degreasing cleaner safe for microwaves.
  • 2. Clean filters: On OTR models, remove and clean grease filters. Replace charcoal filters if saturated.
  • 3. Test with water only: After cleaning, heat a cup of water for 1–2 minutes. If the burning smell persists without any food, an internal component may be overheating.

Persistent electrical odors require professional diagnosis of the magnetron, transformer, wiring, and control board.
